Thought the class might be interested in the
NOW HOUSE http://nowhouseproject.com/ and
A LIVING HOUSE – Terreform’s Fab Tree Hab http://www.inhabitat.com/2005/09/18/fab-tree-hab/
Two homes on opposite ends of the ‘radical’
eco-house design spectrum – one retrofitting a 60-year-old WWII house into a near zero energy home and the other “a living treehouse in which the dwelling itself merges with its environment and nourishes its inhabitants.”

Here is the website that I used to convert watts into kilowatt hours. I hope it helps!

Here is a link that some people might be interested in! You can sign up to receive the eco-structure magazine. It’s a great magazine that’s filled with sustainable building information. The best part is that it’s free!

OK so I found a plug in for Revit that will provide all the energy calculations for your building/model. Here is a pdf from Autodesk that kinda explains how this works ( http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/bim_for_sustainable_design_jun05.pdf ). And here is the website to get the plug-in ( http://www.greenbuildingstudio.com/gbsinc/index.aspx ). You have to go to the web services tab and create a log in. I have not personally tried this yet but from the information on the pdf it sounds pretty easy.

For anyone interested, there are actually six Lustron Houses on Nicollet Ave. in South Minneapolis, 5009-5055. There also three more around the city, two near 40th and Cedar, and another in Lowry Hill. Completely non-residential, but using similar construction, is the White Castle building now at 33rd and Lyndale. The Charlie Lazor “Flatpak” house is at 2024 Thomas Ave. S.

There’s a review in the NY Times today of an interesting exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, “Design and the Elastic Mind,” which features some work quite relevant to discussions we’ve had in class. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/22/arts/design/22elas.html?ex=1361422800&en=c2a9f2fcda1390b6&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

Nick, this is a great reference! I’m actually going to be taking my studio to the exhibit now that you’ve brought it to my attention. Keep these links coming! Thanks!

For professor Newton and anyone else who might be interested: a review of Rem Koolhaas’s new urban plan for Dubai. A “generic” city somewhat resembling lower Manhattan and featuring a giant sphere reminiscent of Boullee’s Cenotaph for Newton.

This is a nice program I got from my last workshop. It’s a Climate Consultant and it pretty much has the average temp/wind velocity/humidity/etc. for throughout the year in a lot of different locations.
